Auto GP Announce Worldwide Calendar for 2012 Season.

The Auto GP series organisers have today announced that the 2012 Auto GP Calendar will expand into the non European market with three flyaway races on the calendar.

With the penultimate round of the Championship taking place this weekend at Valencia with Mugello hosting the season finale, the Auto GP staff have started to plan out the 2012 season, with the expansion plans being a key part for the series, which, in just two seasons, has become one of the most appreciated in Motorsport.

The calendar is obviously a key part of the plan and looking ahead to the 2012 campaign, Auto GP has opted to make some major changes. The biggest of those is the expansion from a European calendar to a worldwide calendar – with the series following the World Touring Car Championship to three of their flyaway races.

Auto GP will, therefore, visit Curitiba, Sonoma and Suzuka in 2012. This means that the series will visit another three continents – North America, South America and Asia – as well some of the best race tracks outside of Europe. Sonoma is known for some of the best racing on the Indycar calendar while Suzuka is a current Formula One circuit.

This intercontinental calendar is part of a long term project which should see an even tighter co-operation between Auto GP, WTCC and series broadcaster Eurosport: according to the proposal, Auto GP will support the WTCC during the whole 2012 season, with eight events, one more than in the 2011 season.

Enzo Coloni said about the announcement: “Improving step by step has always been our phylosophy, and 2011 was a key year, thanks to our agreement with WTCC and Eurosport. So, looking to next season, we believe that the time has come to raise the bar again: our aim for 2012 is an improved calendar, with one more race compared to this year, and an even tighter cooperation with our partners. This means racing for the whole season together with the World Touring Car Championship, including three intercontinental events in Brazil, USA and Japan. We are speaking about this with the WTCC organization and their attitude on the matter is very positive, and in the meantime our staff is working at full steam to cope with the logistical needs.”
